Methodology

To establish the ‘Best cities to explore’ we selected 50 cities from the following seeds lists: Time Out’s Best Cities in The World 2019 and CNTraveller’s best Cities in The World and scored them across the following metrics: percentage of journeys taken on foot, number of walking tours, number of bikes in cycle hire schemes, public transport efficiency, cost of a cab fare, cost of car hire, and the size of each city. Data for these metrics were gathered from the following sources: Means of Transport Modal Share, TripAdvisor, Oliver O’Brien Cycle Hire Map, Sustainable Cities Mobility Index, Price of Travel, TravelSupermarket Car Hire Database and the UN World’s Cities in 2018 report. Once all metrics were sourced they were assigned a score out of 100 based on how valuable they were considered to be. This valuation was then used to form a score for each metric across every city. The top 25 highest scoring cities overall were then used in this campaign. Research was conducted in May 2019. All data and sources can be found here
